Netflix Tax Coming Soon

Consumers will soon need to pay GST on services such as Netflix, music service Spotify and games platform Steam. The Government is expected to confirm this week, Tuesday 25/8.

Revenue Minister, Todd McClay has previously indicated the Government is likely to impose GST on imported digital products and services. Cabinet is now understood to have met to consider the proposal which has become known colloquially, as the Netflix Tax.

Overseas suppliers would be requested to register with NZ IRD to pay GST on behalf of Kiwi consumers. This would mirror the regimes that have been in place in countries such as Norway and South Africa. Australia is expected to start charging GST on digital imports soon.

NZ Retailers also want the Government to abolish or cut the $400 threshold under which physical items can generally be bought from overseas websites and imported tax free.
